Homemade Chicken Stock
What is Chicken Stock?
Homemade chicken broth is a versatile and flavorful base ingredient. It is made by simmering chicken bones and vegetables, herbs, and spices, in water until they release their flavors into a rich liquid. Compared to store-bought broth, homemade broth offers several benefits. It’s naturally made, without any added preservatives or unnecessary additives. It also provides a depth of flavor that’s unmatched by store-bought options. The slow simmering process releases collagen from the bones, giving homemade broth a thicker gelatinous consistency.
What is the difference between stock and broth?
The main difference between chicken stock and broth is their flavors and cooking process….
Chicken stock is typically made by simmering chicken bones and vegetables in water for a long period of time, often with the addition of herbs and spices. This process results in a more concentrated, full-bodied flavor. Collagen is more present in stock due to the longer cooking times, it creates the perfect environment for collagen to melt out of the bones.
Chicken broth is made by simmering chicken meat, often along with vegetables and seasonings, in water for a shorter period of time. It has a lighter, milder flavor than stock and is often used as a base for soups and sauces.
What is collagen?
Collagen is a protein that is naturally found in bones, skin, and other tissues. Collagen is beneficial in homemade chicken stock because it provides several health benefits. It’s essential for joint and cartilage health, as it is a key component of these tissues. It is also beneficial for skin and gut health, and it is known for its potential anti-aging properties, as it helps to keep skin youthful and elastic.
Other ways to use chicken stock
- After letting your stock simmer for 12hours it is rich in flavor. So rich in fact that it can be considered a meal. I have enjoyed drinking my broth straight.
- I currently always have chicken stock on hand, I put it in my 2 year old’s bottle. We attempted to wean her off of a bottle. When we had our second baby and he was getting bottles she wanted them again. I was trying to find substitutes for my daughter to drink, but she would only drink milk. One day I had some leftover stock and it was such a small amount that I didn’t want to save it, but I hate throwing things away. So I decided to throw that stock in her bottle with some milk and she didn’t even notice! It is a great way to get your kids some extra protein and nutrients.
- Soups! You can make a classic chicken noodle soup, or even add it as a base to any soup or chili. I add it in my Homemade Tomato Soup
Best way to store your broth
For long-term use it is best stored frozen in an air-tight container. I use a vacuum sealer machine to make the bag airtight and I seal in pre-portioned out frozen squares.
