High Altitude and Low Humidity Sourdough Starters in Utah

Baking sourdough bread in Utah has unique challenges and opportunities. With its high altitude and low humidity here, the environment affects fermentation and hydration levels, making it essential for you to adjust your techniques and amount of ingredients. This Chocolate Sourdough Starter stands out as an easy choice that not only adapts well to these climate conditions but also brings a delightful twist to traditional sourdough.

Understanding High Altitude Baking

At higher altitudes, the air pressure is lower, which affects how yeast and bacteria behave. Fermentation happens quicker. This means you need to modify your recipes by reducing yeast, increasing hydration, or adjusting baking times to get your starter as active and bubbly as possible.

Low Humidity’s Impact

The arid climate of Utah can lead to rapid moisture loss in dough. This means that you must be cautious about the hydration levels in your starters and breads. A successful sourdough starter in a low humidity environment should be kept adequately hydrated and fed regularly to maintain its strength. I feed mine weekly. This motivates me to bake fresh bread for my family on a regular basis.
